The Island

Hi All

Had a hire car today so decided to see some of the island. Pretty amazing !

Driving here is extreme ! The roads are very narrow, uneven and with blind corners and hairpins everywhere. It is actually very tiring to drive due to having to concentrate so much.

I think I got into 3rd gear twice ! That's how hilly it really is. It was an experience just to drive, let alone see some of the places.

I drove up to ladder hill fort and the top of Jacobs ladder (700 steps and around 650 metres above sea level straight up) the view from the top is breathtaking.

Then onto plantation house, where the governor of the island lives. It is open to the public but only if you book, so will need to plan ahead. But was able to walk the grounds and see the giant tortoises.

Next stop was St Pauls Cathedral. Well I wouldn't call it a cathedral ! Enough said !!

Then on towards sandy bay, some amazing scenery.

The final stop was longwood house, the devils paintpot and napoleons tomb. Again longwood house (which was where napoleon spent most of his time and has a museum and the tomb were closed up and need to book visits to see them.

Then back down the other side of the mountain to Jamestown and to the b&b.

The round trip took about 3hrs but only travelled 11miles. It seemed alot further but solely due to the twisty roads and being in 1st or 2nd gear all the time.

I now know the island a bit more, where to go back and visit and navigating the hairpins !

It was all good :-)

  1. My favourite hair pin was the one right over the back of the island (think it was Sandy Bay) - about a 160 degree corner with an incline of about 60 degrees. Puts any other claim to being the worlds steepest street to shame!

There is a really nice walk over towards Blue Hill (again I think) and keep your eyes peeled for the donkeys!

  2. Great sense of vertigo from your pics (although that may just be me!)
Suggest taking a parachute for your next drive, especially when taking a pic of Emma's hairpin that sounds a must see.
